About Roses
Rose colour is a language, and getting it right is the difference between a gift that lands and one that confuses:
- Red — romantic love. Unambiguous. The right choice for an anniversary, a proposal, or Valentine's Day.
- Pink — admiration, gratitude, gentle affection. The safest rose for someone you are not in a relationship with: a mother, a friend, a colleague.
- White — purity, new beginnings, respect. Used for weddings and equally for sympathy.
- Yellow — friendship, warmth and cheer. Note that yellow carries no romantic meaning at all, which is exactly why it works so well as a platonic gift.
- Orange and peach — enthusiasm, appreciation, congratulations. Lovely for a new job or a graduation.
- Lavender — enchantment and love at first sight.
The number of roses carries meaning too — a single rose for "you are the one", 12 for classic devotion, 51 and 101 as grand declarations. We have written the whole convention up in What the Number of Roses Means.
There are two rose forms worth knowing. Standard roses carry one large bloom on a long stem — this is the rose you picture. Spray roses carry several smaller blooms per stem, giving a softer, fuller, more garden-like bouquet for the same money. Roses are grown year-round, so they never go out of season, and they pair with almost anything: baby's breath for a romantic cloud, eucalyptus for something modern and green, lilies for scale and drama.
How Long Do Roses Last?
A fresh rose bouquet gives you 5 to 10 days, with about a week being typical. Roses are thirstier and more delicate than carnations or lilies, and Dubai is a hard place to keep them.
The two things working against you here are heat and air conditioning — and the second one catches almost everyone out. AC air is bone dry and it draws moisture straight out of the petals. A vase placed under an AC vent, or on a console in the airflow, will wilt in a fraction of the time it should. Equally, direct sun through a window in summer will cook a bouquet in an afternoon, and ten minutes in a parked car will do real damage. Get roses indoors fast and put them somewhere cool, bright but shaded, and still.
Then, to get the full ten days:
- Re-cut the stems at a 45° angle, taking 2–3 cm off, as soon as they arrive — and repeat every few days. A flat cut lets the stem seal against the vase floor and stop drinking.
- Change the water every 2–3 days. In Dubai's warmth bacteria bloom quickly, and a blocked stem is what kills a rose — not a lack of water.
- Strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline, or it will rot and foul the water.
- Keep the bouquet away from the fruit bowl — ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which ages flowers fast.
- If a rose head starts to droop, re-cut the stem and stand it in deep water for an hour. It will often revive completely.
