Carnation Flowers Dubai
Carnations are the most underrated flower in the shop. They are inexpensive, they come in every colour imaginable, and — the part that really matters — they outlast every other common cut flower, often by a factor of two or three. In a climate like Dubai's, that is not a minor detail. It is the whole argument.

About Carnations
The carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) has fringed, ruffled petals packed into a dense head, and a light, clean, faintly spicy scent — nothing like the heavy perfume of a lily, which makes carnations a safe choice for offices, hospital rooms and small apartments.
They come in two forms:
- Standard carnations — one large bloom on each stem. Bold and structured.
- Spray carnations (also called mini carnations) — several smaller blooms per stem, giving a fuller, softer, more abundant bouquet for the same money.
On meaning: carnations broadly represent fascination, distinction and enduring affection. Pink carnations are the classic flower of a mother's love — they are the traditional Mother's Day bloom worldwide. Red says admiration and deep affection; white says pure love, good luck and remembrance; yellow is the one exception to know about, as it has historically carried a note of disappointment or rejection, so it is worth avoiding for a romantic gift. Light purple and bi-colour varieties carry no such baggage and are simply beautiful.
Carnations are grown under glass and are available year-round with no seasonal gaps — there is no month in which you cannot get good ones. They pair superbly with gerberas, roses and daisies, and they are the backbone of most good mixed bouquets precisely because they hold their shape while the softer flowers around them fade.
How Long Do Carnations Last?
This is where carnations win outright. Expect two to three weeks in a vase — and with care, sometimes longer. Compare that with roses at around a week and peonies at five to seven days, and the value becomes obvious. If someone wants flowers that are still going strong when they get back from a trip, carnations are the answer.
Dubai's two flower-killers still apply, though. Heat speeds up ageing, and air conditioning — the one nobody thinks about — dries petals out from the inside. Never stand a vase under or in front of an AC vent, and keep it out of direct sun. Both of these will cut a three-week carnation down to one.
To get the full three weeks:
- Re-cut the stems at a 45° angle when they arrive. With carnations, cut between the nodes — the swollen joints on the stem — not through them, as a cut node will not take up water properly. This one tip alone adds days.
- Change the water every 2–3 days. In Dubai's warmth, bacteria build up fast and clog the stems.
- Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
- Keep them away from the fruit bowl. Carnations are unusually sensitive to ethylene gas, which ripening fruit gives off — it makes the petals curl inward and go papery. This matters more for carnations than for almost any other flower.
- Pinch off individual blooms as they fade; the rest of the bouquet carries on.
